Giả mạo phần mềm chống vi rút đã trở thành một vấn đề phát triển trong những năm gần đây. Các phần mềm độc hại lừa người sử dụng cài đặt và trả tiền cho phần mềm chống vi rút giả mạo mà không làm sạch máy tính, cũng không bảo vệ nó chống lại vi rút.
Ngược lại, các phần mềm chống vi rút giả mạo này bản thân nó là các phần mềm độc hại, vô hiệu hóa các dịch vụ thiết yếu và các phần mềm chống vi rút hợp pháp, do đó làm cho máy tính dễ bị nhiễm vi rút thêm. 

Vần đề sẽ nảy sinh khi người sử dụng vào tải phần mềm chống virus giả mạo. Sau khi cài đặt nó, chương trình "chống virus" sẽ bắt đầu quét virus và "phát hiện" một số virus và Trojan trong hệ thống.

Người sử dụng sẽ được khuyến cáo nên loại bỏ các mối nguy hiểm đã phát hiện, nhưng để làm như vậy họ sẽ phải mua các sản phẩm giả. Và người dùng sẽ không ngờ tới việc kết thúc quá trình này bằng việc trả tiền cho một mối đe dọa không được xác định. Theo một ước tính, trong năm ngoái 25.000.000 máy tính trên toàn thế giới đã bị nhiểm các phần mềm diệt virus giả mạo.

Microsoft’s Malware Protection Center đã xác định 114 chương trình diệt virus giả mạo, bạn nên tham khảo qua danh sách này để tránh việc bị lây nhiễm các phần mềm độc hại.
